C07 – Interaction of spin-currents with magnetic domain walls

Funding period: 2008 – 2011

Principal investigators: Mathias Kläui, Peter Nielaba

Scientific staff: Christine Schieback, Denise Hinzke

By computer simulation methods we plan to investigate the effects of finite system sizes and confining geometry on the spin structure and stability of magnetic domain-wall types as well as the effect of spin-transfer torque on the domain wall motion in such systems by spin-polarized and pure spin-current injection. Our project is closely related to the experimental project C06. Our model goes beyond the standard micromagnetic approach by using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian and additional adiabatic and non-adiabatic terms to account for the spin currents. Temperature effects are included by Gaussian random fields in the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.
