The control of the spin configuration of individual molecules represents one of the ultimate goals for nanoscale materials science and device engineering. Within this project we are aiming to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of individual molecules of single molecule magnets (SMM). For this purpose we perform the chemical synthesis of magnetic molecules with a special focus on the preparation of derivatives with tailored properties and on the rational design of SMMs mostly on the basis of Mn12 and Fe4, complexes. By means of low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy we then address the electronic and magnetic states of individual SMM molecules on surfaces.
