Combined terahertz scanning tunneling microscopy setup

We will apply asynchronous optical sampling for high-sensitivity terahertz spectroscopy in combination with a scanning tunneling microscope in order to access and manipulate terahertz spectra of nanoscale slot antennas on different substrates with high lateral resolution. Positioning of nanoscale objects on these slot antennas will enable a new way of controlling terahertz radiation with nanoscale objects. Nanoscale bridges will be processed in the slot of these antennas on different films exhibiting a phase change (normal to superconducting transition, insulator to metal transition). Controlling the phase of the material of the nanoscale bridge will strongly modulate the reflectivity/transmission THz spectrum.
